There are three major outcomes of the project:
- The publication of an Environmental Profile
- Establishing a community education program
- Establishing an island environmental monitoring program.
A summary of information about the island based upon the research can be
found by clicking here.
Publication and Distribution of an Environmental Profile for Jost Van Dyke and Its Surrounding
“Out-Islands”
The Environmental Profile will provide a description of the natural resource base and the current state
of the environment for our islands, including identification of those natural features, species or
ecosystems requiring special protection through baseline field work and analysis. It will review
institutions, legislation, policies and programmes for environmental planning and resource
management in the British Virgin Islands, particularly as applied to Jost Van Dyke (JVD). It will also
identify major issues, conflicts, and problems in JVD natural resource management and will assess
opportunities for effective responses that contribute to the long-term environmental health of Jost
Van Dyke and its nearby “out-islands”.
The JVD Environmental Profile is intended as a primary resource for the residents of the island and
the Jost Van Dykes (BVI) Preservation Society as it plans its future programming and how the Society
can most effectively serve the JVD community and enhance its central organisational mission and
integrate its work with government programs. The Profile is also intended as a reference source for
BVI government planners and technicians, resource managers, researchers and students, educators,
public policy decision-makers, private-sector developers, consultants, NGOs, donor agencies, and the
general public.
Establishment of A Jost Van Dyke Community
Education and Outreach Programme
The outputs for the community education and outreach programme will include, but are not limited
to:
- implementation of periodic community meetings and school presentations to discuss the
Environmental Profile, ensure understanding of Profile findings, and provide opportunities for
community response and civic action;
- preparation and distribution to all island residents of an overview booklet summarizing the
Environmental Profile in a format appropriate to a non-technical audience;
- production of a bimonthly newsletter of project progress and findings and distribution to
residents and other identified stakeholders;
- preparation of other information and education materials growing out of the project for
distribution to the wider news media in the British Virgin Islands;
- building and maintaining a website, initially focused on the project, project activities, and on the
biodiversity of Jost Van Dyke and its “out-islands”, but which will expand and develop to meet the
needs of the project and the community;
- establishment of on-island Environmental Information Centre (open to the public) located at the
Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society headquarters at Great Harbour, JVD. The Society is committed to
the enhancement and maintenance of the Centre beyond this project as part of its continuing
environment education mission which will be serves the residents and island visitors, estimated at
over 25,000 per year.
Development of An Environmental Monitoring Programme
for Jost Van Dyke
The precise parameters of the environmental monitoring programme will emerge from the
environmental risks, problems and priorities identified in the Environmental Profile and will be
established by the JVD Preservation Society in consultation with the JVD Environmental Advisory
Group, Island Resources Foundation, and appropriate BVI government agencies. The programme
will be modelled on the seven-year environmental monitoring programme established for the island
of Sandy Cay by the Island Resources Foundation in cooperation with the BVI National Parks Trust.
The JVD Preservation Society will employ, train and supervise a resident, part-time Environmental
Assistant to carry out work tasks for the monitoring programme. Once established by this project,
this position will be sustained by the Society, reporting to the Society’s permanent Project Manager.
This position will be task-oriented and will be similar to the Society’s current oversight of an island
resident who serves as the caretaker for the island of Sandy Cay, a task which includes invasive
species monitoring responsibilities. Collected data will be compiled in the Information Centre and
made available to all stakeholders.
